Almost everybody is afraid of death; however, people have different views on their perceptions of death or the idea of dying. The poems â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night† by Dylan Thomas, and â€Å"Because I Couldn’t Stop for Death† by Emily Dickinson have a main theme in common which is death. However Dickinson presents the idea of the acceptance of death, and Thomas presents the idea of fighting against death. Even though the perception of death is different for each writer, both use similar figurative language techniques, including metaphors, personification, alliteration, assonance, and others to form their views†¦show more content†¦In Thomas’s poem he uses other types of figurative language. At the beginning and through the poem, the speaker talks about â€Å"That good night†, as well as the sunset and the night fall takes place in the poem. Extended metaphor is present at the begi nning of Line 1, Thomas uses the word â€Å"Night† to represent the afterlife or a void, and the sunset to represent the moment of death. Thomas implies how easy life can goes away by using the night fall and the last lingering light of the evening. The tone of the speaker in both poem are different. In the poem â€Å"Because I Couldn’t Stop for Death† the speaker is obviously dead. The speaker is a ghost or a spirit of a person talking about how the day when she died was. Further, the below mentioned task talks about the inequality issue faced by women worldwide, the current situation present in the business environment, contribution of the HR departments in this case and lastly, recommendations to the organization to resolve the problem. More details about the task are discussed below: Gender Inequality Issue Analyzing the whole worldwide economic situation, it shall be understood that females in every sector are facing the gender inequality issue. Working women worldwide are paid less according to their work provided. The human resource department of the company does not treat male and female equally in the business environment due to which such problem occurs. The department does not promote the female staff in the senior position nor do they treat them equally as compared to men. The Human Resource Director report 2016-2017 explains that according to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) many companies in the todays environment understand the importance of equality in the workplace and they are also planning policies to resolve the problem as well (WGEA, 2017). The management is aiming to initiate corrective actions so that the female employees can work safely in organization. The director of WEGA explained their opinion by stating that more than four million and eleven thousand employees are suffering from the problem of discrimination in the workplace. Apart from that, the main issue is that even after initiating various reforms on the part companies and governments, there is no such result portrayed in the society (Bartlett, Rhode, Grossman, 2016). In the present scenario, the gender gap is increasing day by day, even in Australia, it has reached to 15.3 per cent which shows that the male employees are earning well whereas female employees do not receive the opportunity to earn in the market (Hilton, 2017). The human resource department is most important department for the employee in the organization as they listen to the problem of employees and solve them as well. Thus, the human resource departments need to understand it as critical issue and solve them as well. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) refers to the act of reducing the unethical activities from the environment. The amended bill was passed in the year 2012 which aimed to provide equal level of opportunities to both men and women in the society. The main aim of this bill was to reduce the discrimination between both the genders and provide a safe and secure working environment for female. It is the responsibility of the human resource department of the company to correctively take responsibility for the actions which they perform in the environment, and all such actions shall impact the employees in a better way. The activities of the managers should reduce the effects of discrimination in the environment (Thompson, 2016). Lastly, it shall be noted that the problem of inequality arises due to the negligence of the human resource management to act upon this issue. They did not consider it a severe aspect which can affect the working of the business. But it is the need of the era that organizations and its human resource departments shall implement plans to solve the discrimination among men and women. So, in order to change the situation, it is important for employees to understand their responsibilities towards the females present in their organization (Vitriol, 2016). Current situation Usually, it is considered that men are the stronger sex present in the environment and women are the weaker section of the society. It has become the thinking of people that women cannot perform the action which men can do. While comparing people always consider women weak in every field as compared to men. This is the reason due to which in workplace women are paid less than men. People think that women are not meant to do job in an organization; in fact, they are meant to do household chores and stay at home. But in the current environment, such mentality of people has changed (Hacker, 2017). People do not compare male and female neither do they stop women growing in the external market. As women are proving themselves in every field which clearly shows that the reason to pay them less because they are women is invalid. All people present in the society shall be paid according to their designation in the market. NO discrimination should occur just because of age, caste, sex etc. in the business world. People should be judged on the basis of their thinking skills not because he is a male or female (Mller, Szabo, 2016). Further, it shall be noted that awareness is still a topic of concern for women but now the organizations understand their corporate social responsibility to provide equal status to women as compared to men. Nowadays many initiatives are also being led by the government to improve the attrition rate in the country, as it impacts the overall growth of the economy as well. The governments of many countries through their policies are trying to change the thinking of people that women can too succeed and grow in the business (Ozturk, Tatli, 2016). They mainly want to provide equal level of opportunity to women as compared to men; along with which they want to provide safety to them as well. Although, it is difficult for organizations to change the workplace environment and thinking of the male staff it is the need of the era. All companies shall promote the recruitment of women in the organization to resolve such issues (Ponthieux, Meurs, 2015). Role of HR department in the issue The HR executives played a negative role in the environment in case of gender equality and discrimination. Instead of promoting the women to work, the executives demoted them by discriminating them and pay them less as compared to men. The HR executives in an organization are responsible for promoting the interest all employees in the organization and satisfying them as well. Further, these executives gave rise to inequality in the market by initiating such activities. Inefficiency in the HRM policies increased the tension of women to work in the industry as they were being discriminated and sexually harassed in every field (Rowley, Kang, Lim, 2016). Due to the prevalence of such activities, they were unable to work in their respective organizations. Further, it shall be noted that organizations can only survive in the business environment by attaining diversified task force which is eligible to perform different types of action, so the company needs qualified human resource to grow in the business world. And by initiating such strategies they cannot attain qualified females in their organization which is a drawback for them (Tolbert, Castilla, 2017). But it shall also be noted that now organizations have understood that in order to grow they need both males and females as human resource in their organization. With respect to that they have started promoting women in the workplace; also safety has become their utmost priority in the organization. The HR executives have stooped the discriminative activities and are ensuring that no women get harassed mentally or physically in the organization (Joshi, Neely, Emrich, Griffiths, George, 2015). Organizations like, KPMG, Telstra, PWC are aiming to reduce the gender pay gap and initiate equality in their activities. Further many organizations have promoted women on the top most position in the organization as well. Some of them are, PepsiCo (CEO- Indra Nooyi), Marvell Technologies (Co-founder- Weili Dai), Huffington Post (Founder- Arianna Huffington) etc. Thus it shall be noted that now the world is changing its mentality and it is shifting their focus on the interest of women as well. In this way, only the industries will collectively lead its way to success. Recommendations The following recommendations tell about the ways in which the organizations can provide gender equality and avoid discrimination in the organization. It is the utmost responsibility of the top level management is to remove the discriminative activities from the organization. The management shall focus on initiating equality in the organization so that no person feels insecure while working in the organization. They should provide pay all employees according to their designation and capabilities. The income level shall not be segregated on the basis of sex, caste, age, creed etc. The HR executives shall monitor the implementation of such activities in the organization (Graham, Belliveau, Hotchkiss, 2017). Training programs should be implemented to train the employee to work ethically in the organization. The HR executives should make every male staff understand that it is their responsibility to take care of the female staff in the organization and do not disrespect them. Equality is one of the social responsibilities which the HR executives should mainly focus on. The code of ethics should be amended by the top level management and it should explain the responsibility of the team on a whole to remove the discrimination from the organization. Further, the safety of women should be the important aspect of the organization which they should focus. The departments should hire more female staff to equate the ratio of male and female in the organization. Further, this will increase positivity in the environment which will ultimately increase the efficiency of the company in the market as well. Positivity and flexibility will give rise identified brand image of the company in the market (Hill, Upadhyay, Beekun, 2015). Lastly, the performance appraisal method should be adopted by different organizations prevailing in the environment. The appraisal method shall evaluate the performance of the employees and upraise the designation and pay according to the work performed by them in the organization. This will improve the act of equality in the organization and it will also provide women satisfaction while working in the organization. Conclusion Thus in the limelight of above mentioned events, it shall be noted that equality is a basic right which shall be given to all individuals. Women are considered as weaker section of the society due to which they are paid less in the organization but such practices should be prohibited by the employee. Gender inequality and discrimination reduce the scope of an organization to succeed in the international market. All men and women should be treated equally in an organization and the human resource department of the company should analyze and look at this issue. Also, women should be provided safety and security in the organization so that they do not feel insecure during the job and provide the best result of their efficiencies. The major reason is the incompetence of the human resource management team to understand the capabilities of women in the organization. Lennie is very strong and big but hismind is like a childs, so the men dont respect him as an equal. For example,George explains to Slim that he, Used to play jokes on Lennie cause he was toodumb to take care of imself(p. 40). Lennie does not take part in the activities theworkers do in their spare time. Lennie does not go to town with the men. In Weed,Lennie gets in trouble because the people dont understand his problem. Curley shows this abouthimself when he is hostile and angry when he meets Lennie for the first time. Curleyshows his extreme insecurity in the bunkhouse as Slim and Carlson are not afraid ofhim. Curley is afraid losing his power of intimidation. He notices that Lennie is weakand afraid, and turns his anger on Lennie. Battle of Paoli During the American Revolution The Paoli Massacre occurred on September 20-21, 1777, during the American Revolution (1775-1783). In the late summer of 1777, General Sir William Howe embarked his army at New York City and sailed south with the goal of capturing the American capital of Philadelphia. Moving up the Chesapeake Bay, he landed at Head of Elk, MD and began marching north towards Pennsylvania. Acting to protect the city, General George Washington attempted to make a defensive stand along the Brandywine River in early September. Meeting Howe at the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, Washington was flanked by the British and forced to retreat east to Chester. While Howe paused at Brandywine, Washington crossed the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia and marched northwest with the goal of using the river as a defensive barrier. Reconsidering, he elected to re-cross to the south bank and began moving against Howe. Responding, the British commander prepared for battle and engaged the Americans on September 16. Clashing near Malvern, the fight proved brief as a massive thunderstorm descended on the area forc ing both armies to break off the battle. Wayne Detached In the wake of the Battle of the Clouds, Washington first retreated west to Yellow Springs and then to Reading Furnace in order to obtain dry powder and supplies. As the British were badly hampered by the rutted and muddy roads as well as the high water of the Schuylkill, Washington decided to detach forces led by Brigadier Generals William Maxwell and Anthony Wayne on September 18 to harass the enemys flanks and rear. It was also hoped to that Wayne, with 1,500 men that included four light guns and three troops of dragoons, could strike at Howes baggage train. To assist him in these efforts, Washington directed Brigadier General William Smallwood, who was moving north from Oxford with 2,000 militia, to rendezvous with Wayne. As Washington resupplied and began marching to re-cross the Schuylkill, Howe moved to Tredyffrin with the goal of reaching Swedes Ford. Advancing on Howes rear, Wayne encamped two miles southwest of the Paoli Tavern on September 19. Writing to Washington, he believed that his movements were unknown to the enemy and stated, I believe [Howe] knows Nothing of my situation. This was incorrect as Howe had been apprised of Waynes actions through spies and intercepted messages. Recording in his diary, British staff officer Captain John Andre commented, Intelligence having been received of the situation of General Wayne and his design for attacking our Rear, a plan was concerted for surprising him, and the execution entrusted to Major General [Charles] Grey. The British Move Seeing an opportunity to crush part of Washingtons army, Howe directed Grey to assemble a force of around 1,800 men consisting of the 42nd and 44th Regiments of Foot as well as the 2nd Light Infantry to strike at Waynes camp. Departing on the evening of September 20, Greys column moved down the Swedes Ford Road before reaching the Admiral Warren Tavern approximately one mile from the American position. In an effort to maintain secrecy, Andre reported that the column took every inhabitant with them as they passed along. At the tavern, Grey coerced a local blacksmith into serving as a guide for the final approach. Wayne Surprised Advancing around 1:00 AM on September 21, Grey ordered his men to remove the flints from their muskets to ensure that an accidental shot would not alert the Americans. Instead, he instructed his troops to rely on the bayonet, earning him the nickname No Flint.. Pushing past the tavern, the British approached around a set of woods to the north and quickly overwhelmed Waynes pickets who fired several shots. Alerted, the Americans were up and moving in a matter of moments, but were unable to resist the force of the British attack. Assaulting with around 1,200 men in three waves, Grey first sent forward the 2nd Light Infantry followed by the 44th and 42nd Foots. Pouring into Waynes camp, the British troops were able to easily spot their adversaries as they were silhouetted by their campfires. Though the Americans opened fire, their resistance was weakened as many lacked bayonets and could not fight back until they reloaded. Working to rescue the situation, Wayne was hampered by the chaos caused by the suddenness of Greys assault. With British bayonets slashing through his ranks, he directed the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment to cover the retreat of the artillery and supplies. As the British began to overwhelm his men, Wayne directed Colonel Richard Humptons 2nd Brigade to shift left to cover the retreat. Misunderstanding, Humpton instead shifted his men right and had to be corrected. With many of his men fleeing to the west through gaps in a fence, Wayne directed Lieutenant Colonel William Butlers 4th Pennsylvania Regiment to assume a position in nearby woods to provide covering fire. Wayne Routed Pressing forward, the British drove the disorganized Americans back. Andre stated, the Light Infantry being ordered to form to the front, rushed along the line putting to the bayonet all they came up with, and, overtaking the main herd of the fugitives, stabbed great numbers and pressed on their rear until it was thought prudent to order them to desist. Forced from the field, Waynes command retreated west towards White Horse Tavern with the British in pursuit. To compound the defeat, they encountered Smallwoods approaching militia who were also put to flight by the British. Breaking off the pursuit, Grey consolidated his men and returned to Howes camp later in the day. Paoli Massacre Aftermath In the fighting at Paoli, Wayne sustained 53 killed, 113 wounded, and 71 captured while Grey lost a mere 4 killed and 7 wounded. Quickly dubbed the Paoli Massacre by the Americans due to the intense, one-sided nature of the fight, there is no proof that British forces acted inappropriately during the engagement. In the wake of the Paoli Massacre, Wayne criticized Humptons performance which led to his subordinate preferred charges of negligence against his superior. A subsequent court of inquiry found that Wayne was not guilty of any misconduct but stated that he had made errors. Angered by this finding Wayne demanded and received a full court-martial. Held later that fall, it exonerated him of any blame for the defeat. Remaining with Washingtons army, Wayne later distinguished himself at the Battle of Stony Point and was present at the Siege of Yorktown. Though Grey had succeeded in smashing Wayne, the time taken for the operation allowed Washingtons army to move north of the Schuylkill and assume a position to contest a crossing of the river at Swedes Ford. Frustrated, Howe elected to move north along the river towards the upper fords. This forced Washington to follow along the north bank. Secretly counter-marching on the night of September 23, Howe reached Flatlands Ford, near Valley Forge, and crossed the river. In a position between Washington and Philadelphia, he advanced on the city which fell on September 26. Eager to rescue the situation, Washington attacked part of Howes army at the Battle of Germantown on October 4 but was narrowly defeated. Subsequent operations failed to dislodge Howe and Washington entered winter quarters at Valley Forge in December. For a more practical description, a good example can be derived from the 1994 court case of the State of Oregon v. Lawson. The defense attorney in this case attempted to convince the judge that his client’s actions were not that of those persons who matched the usual profile observed of offenders that committed a similar type of crime. Therefore, his client could not be found guilty as a result of this logic. Essentially, Inductive Criminal Profiling is logical reasoning based on statistics and generalities resulting from analyzing data. The following (fictitious) example showcases the reasoning and logic involved in this type of profiling. Compiled statistics have shown that 75 percent of serial killers who have attacked nurses do so within 200 yards of a hospital, are white men who live alone, did not attend college, are between the age of 25 and 35 and drive small red cars. A suspect has been questioned by police who they believe to be the offender in the death of a nurse but they do not yet have sufficient evidence to make an arrest. They determine by profiling if this could be a person who is more likely than the majority of the population to have committed such a crime. Though the offender does not drive a red car and the nurse was killed far away from a hospital, the offender is a white male who lives alone and did not attend college, this person still fits the profile and is thus deemed worthy of further investigation (Turvey, 1998). The advantages of the Inductive method of criminal profiling are apparent. Primarily, it is a tool that is straightforward and simple to use. Profilers do not need a formal forensic education or other specialized training in the field of criminal behavioral studies to effectively implement this method. Moreover, general offender profiles can be collected by police agencies without expending a great amount of resources, time or effort and does not require the profiler to possess speci alized abilities. A typical criminal profile is usually a relatively short list illustrating unqualified offender similarities. â€Å"These generalizations can accurately predict some of the non-distinguishing elements of individual criminal behavior, but not with a great deal of consistency or reliability† (Turvey, 1998).
